中國は1日、北京の天安門広場で行った建國60周年記念軍事パレードで、中距離・長距離核ミサイルなど戦略兵器を含む國産先端兵器63種を披露し、國防力に対する強い自信を示した。人民日報の姉妹紙「環球時報」が報じたところによると、この日公開された兵器はすべて中國が獨自技術で開発したもので、このうち36種は初公開だという。
中國はこの日、米國本土を直接攻撃できる射程距離1萬200キロの「東風31A」大陸間弾道ミサイル（ICBM）を初めて公開した。東風31Aは、建國50周年に當たる1999年に初公開された「東風31」の改良型で、核弾頭3個を搭載している。また、地上攻撃用巡航ミサイル（LACM）「長剣10」や、中距離核弾頭ミサイル「東風21C」も姿を見せた。この日公開されたミサイルは合わせて5種・108基に上り、10年前の建國50周年の際に公開された36基に比べ3倍に増えている。中國が、新型兵器の大挙公開という前例のない行為に出たのは、世界第2位の経済力にふさわしい軍事力を內外に誇示するものだと解釈されている。梁光烈國防相は、「西側先進國が持っている各種の兵器を、既に基本的に保有しており、一部の兵器は世界最高水準」と自負した。
胡錦濤國家主席は記念式典で、「中國は60年の間、あらゆる苦難と試練に勝利し、世界が注目する業績を成し遂げた。中華民族の偉大な復興を確信している。中華民族の念願である祖國統一のため、両岸（中國と臺灣）関係の発展も継続して推進する」と語った。
記念式典は1日午前10時、60発の祝砲に続き、8000人の將兵が參加する軍事パレードで始まった。胡主席はこの日、1臺5億2000萬ウォン（約3976萬円）もする中國製の高級リムジン「紅旗」に乗って閲兵し、注目を集めた。
軍事パレードに続いて執り行われた各界の関係者10萬人の行進では、中國歴代の最高指導者の大型肖像畫や政権獲得當時のスローガンが書かれた大型パネルなどの行列が順に通り過ぎた。
同日夜8時には、天安門広場の特設舞臺で、映畫監督の張蕓謀氏が演出し6萬人余りが參加した大規模な祝賀公演が行われた。
公演は、習近平國家副主席の夫人で歌手のポン・リーユアンや香港の俳優ジャッキー・チェンらが熱唱する中、胡主席や江沢民前主席ら中國の指導部が全員広場に降りてきて公演団と共に踴るイベントで幕を下ろした。
