Yellow Tungsten Oxide Applied for Cement-based Absorbing Material

Yellow tungsten oxide is applied as a cement-based absorbing material because it has certain shielding properties against gamma rays. Well, what is the shielding performance of yellow tungsten oxide against gamma rays? Some experts used tungsten oxide powder as a fine aggregate to prepare a sample of φ10.5cm x 6cm cylindrical cement-based materials, and tested the shielding performance of the sample against gamma rays through an experimental system composed of a PTW UNDOS standard meter and ~ (60) Co, ~ (137) Cs sources.

The results showed that with the increase of the content of tungsten oxide, the tungsten-containing cement-based materials have enhanced shielding performance against gamma rays. For gamma rays with an average energy of 1.25 MeV, as the amount of blue tungsten oxide increases from 0 vol% to 30 vol%, the transmittance of gamma rays at a thickness of 6 cm decreases from 54.3% to 41.5%; the amount of yellow tungsten oxide increases from 0 vol% to 20 vol%, the transmittance of gamma rays at 6cm thickness decreased from 54.3% to 37.0%. In other words, as the cement-based absorbing material, yellow tungsten oxide has better shielding of gamma rays than blue tungsten oxide and is more suitable for cement substrates.
