Tungsten oxide coating is well-known as a popular heat insulation coating because of the optical properties of tungsten oxide – high shielding performance to near infrared light and ultraviolet light and high transmittance to visible light. So, the production of tungsten oxide coating has been attracting much attention. It has been reported that tungsten oxide coating can be prepared via a sol-gel type process from tungstic chloride and tungstic acid precursors. Wherein, various combinations of ethanediol and block co-polymers are used as stabilizing additives to achieve microstructural control.

And the prepared heat insulation coating of tungsten oxide was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy and thermal analysis, with color changes investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy. And it was found that strongly photochromic transparent coatings were successfully prepared by the reaction of tungstic acid under basic conditions in the presence of ethanediol.
